Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film "Dune" is an adaption of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel from 1965. The narrative of Paul Atreides, a young aristocrat whose family gets entangled in a convoluted power struggle over the desert planet Arrakis—the universe's sole supply of the most precious material known to man—is told in this film, which is set in a far-off future in which interplanetary travel is popular.

Chani, a Fremen resident of Arrakis, narrates the opening scene of the film, outlining the importance of the planet and the persecution her people endure under the cruel reign of House Harkonnen, who have taken advantage of the world for its spice production. The spice, sometimes referred to as melange, is a potent medication that improves brain function, prolongs life, and is necessary for space navigation.

The story then turns to the noble family of House Atreides on the ocean planet Caladan. The Emperor has given Duke Leto Atreides the task of removing the Harkonnens from Arrakis' governance. Leto accepts the mission in the hopes of forming an alliance with the Fremen, the Arrakian people who live in the desert, and using their guerilla warfare abilities, even though he is aware that this is probably a trap created by the Emperor to undermine his house.

The son of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica, Paul Atreides, is revealed to be a young man with enormous potential and destiny. He has received instruction from his mother, Lady Jessica, in the mystical ways of the Bene Gesserit, as well as from Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck in politics and combat. The Bene Gesserit are a reclusive group of women who possess exceptional mental and physical skills. They think Paul might be the predicted superbeing Kwisatz Haderach.

In his weird dreams, Paul sees a mystery girl on a desert planet who seems to be hinting to his fate, while the Atreides family gets ready to go to Arrakis. The Atreides arrive to Arrakis and find themselves up against their opponents' political schemes in addition to the hard desert environment. They soon learn of the planet's perils, from the enormous sandworms that prowl the desert to the equipment that the Harkonnens left behind that has been compromised.

A surprise strike planned by the Harkonnens and the Emperor's elite Sardaukar warriors shatters Duke Leto's attempts to win over the Fremen, who are represented by Stilgar. The armies of Atreides are destroyed by the onslaught. The family doctor, Dr. Wellington Yueh, betrays Duke Leto by turning off the palace shields in return for Baron Vladimir Harkonnen's pledge to release his imprisoned wife. Leto is apprehended and slain as a result of Yueh's treason, but Yueh escapes the city with Paul and Jessica in tow before they are put to death.

Paul and Jessica use their expertise as Bene Gesserit to survive as they flee into the desert. Paul starts to understand the significance of his visions and the full scope of his abilities. Eventually, Chani, the girl from Paul's visions, and Stilgar lead a party of Fremen who find them. Following a difficult exchange, Paul gains the respect of the Fremen when he uses ritual fighting to defeat a Fremen warrior named Jamis.

As this is going on, Baron Harkonnen seizes back command of Arrakis and starts pursuing the last of the Atreides supporters. Still, the Fremen defy Harkonnen authority and remain a mysterious and powerful force in the desert. After being brought to a Fremen sietch, or village, Paul and Jessica start assimilating into the Fremen way of life. Paul appears to have a major influence on Arrakis's and its people's future, based on his visions.

As the movie ends, Paul is ready for the difficulties that lie ahead and has accepted his potential after seeing glimpses of a future in which he leads the Fremen in a huge revolt. The movie lays the groundwork for Paul's quest to continue and the epic narrative to unfold, with more to be revealed in later parts.
