Sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster, who is hooked up to an oxygen tank, attends a support group meeting. Her humorous and acerbic voice introduces us to this world of sickness. Hazel's pessimistic view is contrasted sharply with that of her parents, who are smiling with artificial optimism. And Augustus Waters comes next. Entering with a casual attitude, Gus, as he wants to be called, sports a grenade scar that serves as a continuous reminder of his struggle with osteosarcoma. A glimmer of interest ignites between them as their eyes connect.

Books rule Hazel's world, especially the made-up novel "An Imperial Affliction." The protagonist's destiny is left unseen since the novel ends suddenly. Hazel becomes enraged by this, symbolizing her lack of control over her own life. Fascinated by her enthusiasm, Gus promises to grant her dream, which is to travel to Amsterdam and meet the book's reclusive author.

Under the Dutch night sky, Amsterdam transforms into a colorful tapestry woven with tense first dates, snooped looks, and muttered secrets. Charming and daring, Gus forces Hazel to step outside of her comfort zone. The weight of history is bearing down on them as they visit the Anne Frank House. Gus proclaims his love while on a canal boat, his voice resonating over the calm waves. However, Gus's illness is back, casting a persistent shadow over the growing romance.

Once again, things get gloomy in Indiana. Gus's contagious optimism wanes as a result of his therapy. Hazel struggles with the inevitable nature of loss after being forced to acknowledge the frailty of their relationship. They visit the arrogant disappointment, the author, in his magnificent mansion. Hazel still can't find the solution she seeks, and the book doesn't provide comfort.

An important turning point occurs. Gus discloses his hidden desire to be regarded as "okay" by those whose lives he impacted while having a picnic. Hazel's skepticism is shattered by the genuine tenderness in his eyes. Fear and frustration drive a gut-wrenching brawl between them. An actual physical barrier separates them as the oxygen tank, a recurring emblem of Hazel's limitations, comes into play.

Their love persists in spite of all the turbulence. Weakened but unflinching, Gus gives Hazel a figurative "grand tour" that includes a night in a rented room with false smokes and champagne. They pretend to be normal, a momentary diversion from the truth of their circumstances.

The inevitable happens. Gus's health deteriorates. His hospital room, a dramatic contrast to their Amsterdam experience, is pristine and white. Heartbroken, Hazel reads a letter that Gus left her, in which he begs for her pain in a loving manner.

The final scene of the movie is set during Gus's burial, which is a heartfelt celebration of his life. Hazel reads a eulogy she prepared for him, distraught yet oddly unwavering. Her voice, which was before sardonic, has gained power. She makes the decision to focus on the joy and beauty Gus brought into her life, which is evidence of the enduring power of love.

Hazel is in a support group meeting in the last scene. She notices a fresh arrival. Her look carries the weight of her experience as she introduces herself. The prospect of a connection flickers in the antiseptic chamber as the film closes on a hopeful note.
